Child swims in a swimming lap pool

How Deep Should My Swimming Pool Be?

16 August

Determining the depth of a residential swimming pool can be confusing to a lot of homeowners. Choosing the right specifications matter, especially when safety is a major consideration. There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to the standard depth of swimming pools. But there are factors that can help you narrow down your options.

The Purpose of Your Home Pool

Different types of pools vary in depth, so the first thing to do is to determine what kind of pool you want to install in your home.

If you are eyeing a recreational plunge pool for beach balls, water volleyball and other pool games, the minimum depth must be 0.9 metres to accommodate both adults and children. The maximum depth can go deeper between 1.2 to 1.5 metres if the pool is solely for adults.

Lap pools are usually deeper since they need to accommodate the swimmer’s entire body. The depth should be enough for swimmers to take laps and turn safely without scraping the bottom. A safe standard depth for lap pools is 2.4 metres.

Kiddie pools need to be shallow since children trend to wade in the water. Children grow quickly, so it would be impractical for your kiddie pool to have one depth. Standard kiddie pools usually have multiple depths that allow children to transition from the shallow part into the deeper centre of the pool. Standard multi-depth kiddie pools begin at 0.3 metres and slope to the middle at 1.2 metres.

Considering Multi-Depth Pools

If you want your pool to accommodate both adults and children, consider having a multi-depth pool. The multi-depth layout is ideal for recreational plunge pools and follows a similar principle with standard kiddie pools. It starts with a shallow wading area at both ends, and the deepest part is found at the middle.

With staggered depths starting from 0.6 to 1.8 metres, multi-depth pools are ideal for teaching children how to swim, allowing them to graduate from the shallow part to the deep centre. Instead of having two separate pools for kids and adults, multi-depth recreational pools can be a cost-efficient option.

Consider your options carefully and if necessary, seek the expert advice of your local pool builders and installers.
