According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, three in five Australian adults are either overweight or obese. What comes next may convince them to change their lifestyle.
Following a recent Canadian study showing how obesity shaves years off a person’s life, Professor Stephen Colaguiri at the Boden Institute of Obesity, Nutrition, Exercise, & Eating Disorders conducted a follow-up study involving Australians. The findings reinforce the need to cut on calories in as early as one’s childhood.
Professor Colaquiri’s study showed that overweight individuals, or those with a body mass index (BMI) of between 25 and 30, might lose three years off their life expectancy, while those with a BMI of between 30 to 35 (considered obese) could lose up to six years. Persons with a BMI of more than 35 (very obese) might lose as much as eight years off their life expectancies.
These do not account for the lower quality of life that most overweight or obese individuals face, due to the development of weight-related diseases like diabetes 2 and cardiovascular conditions.
In Western Australia, the number of overweight and obese cases comprised a tenth of the national overweight and obese count in the years 2011 and 2012. Experts fear it will only continue to rise.
In light of this, health advocates have urged communities to encourage health-promoting activities like walking from home to school and back. Meanwhile, notable Perth pool companies like Guardian Pools want to add swimming to the list. The average Aussie can burn an estimated 900 calories from just an hour of butterfly strokes.
If you want a pool installed for good health, it would be preferable to have one where you can swim laps. Perth fiberglass pools come in various designs with enough length to allow you to swim and burn unwanted calories in a short time. The more laps you take, the more fats and calories you lose, while tightening those muscles.
If your backyard does not have the right size or shape for a lap pool, you can consider other pool shapes from reliable fiberglass pool suppliers. This could mean shorter laps, which you can make up for by doing more.
Fitness, however, is better achieved through a holistic approach. Swimming should be complemented by other activities like brisk walking, jogging, and eating a balanced diet. Nevertheless, swimming is a good start if you want fitness and fun in one package.
