Tired of worrying about monthly membership fees at your local gym, but not keen on putting your workouts on hold? The swimming pool is your friend. Women’s Health writer Selene Yeager is one of the believers in the body-sculpting power of convenient Perth swimming pools, and in her article, she explains why.
Look no further than superstar Natalie Coughlin to observe how water can whittle a sexy, sculpted silhouette. And you don’t have to be an Olympic gold medallist to get the perfect body. When researchers at Indiana University compared recreational fitness swimmers with non-swimmers, they found that swimmers of all ages had more lean muscle and trimmer waists and hips.
Unlike conventional weight training, pool training provides a toned-down exercise environment without taking the “work” out of “workout”. The water’s buoyancy supports the entire weight of the body, and also helps prevent muscle fatigue and injuries one could get from lifting heavy weights. Here are a few swimming pool workouts that are proven to trim your body down more effectively.
The K-Tread – To do it, you’d have to go to the pool’s deep end. Once there, you have to tread water by making small circles with cupped hands, then lift your right leg straight in front of you, keeping it at hip level. The toes on your left leg should touch the bottom of the pool, and you must hold the position for 5 seconds. After 5 seconds, repeat for the other leg. This workout is perfect for toned buttocks, arms, legs, and abs.
Water jogging – This exercise is precisely what the name implies. Its effectiveness peaks at 17 calories burned per minute at maximum intensity; much better than on land. It is advisable to start gradually–jog for one to three-minutes in waist-high water, then slowly increase the intensity over time.
The Bicycle – The simplest of all exercises on this list, the bicycle pool workout targets your abs, shoulders, and legs. You simply have to rest your elbows on the pool edge and hold your position to keep from floating away, kick your legs in a pedalling motion, and you’re all set.
“Wave Maker” – While in chest-deep water, hold onto the pool’s edge and kick like a dolphin, as hard and as fast as you can for 30 seconds, trying to create the biggest possible waves. The entire workout targets the back, butt, abs, and legs.
There are a lot more slimming water exercises for you. So what are you waiting for? Choose among numerous swimming pools for sale from Perth pool builders like Guardian Pools and splash your way to a body fit for gods.
